About the Company
Founded in 1993, this Johannesburg-based family owned business has built a strong reputation as a trusted supplier of stationery and office consumables to some of South Africa's leading corporate clients. From its base in Benrose, the company delivers a complete service offering, including stock management, cost centre management and a full e-commerce solution for partner companies.
The business runs lean, with a close-knit team of around forty people across departments. The environment is friendly, informal and team-oriented, with a culture of stepping in to help wherever needed.
Following a recent move from an on-premise server to a fully cloud-hosted environment, the IT function is leaner than before, but the role remains central to keeping the business running. This is a genuine opportunity for someone at the start of their IT career to learn the practical side of business IT inside a stable, supportive company.
Job Overview
We are looking for a Junior IT Support Administrator to join a family owned stationery and office supply business in Benrose, Johannesburg. This is a graduate level opportunity, ideal for someone who has recently completed or is currently studying toward an IT qualification and who is keen to build a career in IT support.
You will be the sole IT person on site, reporting to the Sales Director. Your day will be split across user support, troubleshooting, managing the cloud-hosted environment and supporting the systems that keep the business running, including Office 365, Sage 200 Evolution and Pastel Payroll. You will also be the point person when the internet goes down, working with the ISP to push for fast resolution.
This is a hands-on, varied role in a small business where you will gain exposure across systems, networking, business applications and end-user support. It suits someone tech-curious, calm under pressure and eager to learn how IT supports a real working business.
Duties and Responsibilities
Systems, Networks and Cloud Environment
- Maintain and manage company systems and networks.
- Manage and maintain the cloud-hosted server and Remote Desktop Services (RDS) environment (hosted by Metrofile Cloud).
- Liaise with the cloud hosting provider when issues fall outside your scope, while still attempting first-line resolution where possible using available knowledge bases.
- Maintain printers, networking equipment and other office hardware.
End-User Support and Office 365
- Provide day-to-day IT support to internal staff across the business.
- Troubleshoot Office 365 issues, including Outlook profile and email problems, backups and general user queries.
- Support and maintain the business's Excel-based quotation tool, including updating pricing using Vlookups and resolving macro-related issues.
- Compile sales analysis and other Excel reports for clients on request.
Business Applications
- Provide first-line support for Sage 200 Evolution and Pastel Payroll users.
- Investigate and resolve common system issues, such as data anomalies where stock values or prices return null, using vendor helplines and online knowledge bases as needed.
- Pull statements and reports out of Sage on request.
Connectivity and ISP Management
- Act as the first point of contact when internet or VOIP connectivity fails, communicating clearly with the team while resolution is in progress.
- Engage and push the ISP for updates and faster resolution during outages.
- Ensure backup connectivity, such as a 5G router, is in place and working for critical users.
Payroll and UIF Administration
- Submit the monthly electronic UIF declaration.
- Pull payroll reports from Pastel Payroll on request, typically a few times per year.
General Business Support
- Assist the wider team with operational tasks during quieter IT periods, such as supporting with packaging, courier bookings or occasional supply runs.
- Look for opportunities to introduce AI tools and digital improvements that help the business work smarter.
Minimum Requirements
- Matric (Grade 12).
- Currently studying toward, or completed, a relevant IT Certification such as CompTIA A+, CompTIA N+ or similar, or studying towards an IT diploma or degree.
- Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office 365, with particular strength in Excel (Vlookups, basic macros, report compilation).
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills, including a willingness to research and self-learn using online resources.
- Ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks at once and prioritise calmly.
- Confident communication skills, including the ability to deal firmly and professionally with external service providers such as ISPs.
- A calm temperament under pressure, with the emotional maturity to handle frustrated users during outages without taking it personally.
- A genuine interest in building a career in IT support.
Nice-to-Have
- CompTIA A+ and N+ certifications specifically.
- Exposure to Sage 200 Evolution or Pastel Payroll from an IT support perspective.
- Interest in, or exposure to, AI tools and how they can be applied to improve business processes.
- Exposure to Google Ads or other digital marketing tools.
- Previous experience in a small business or SME environment.
Personal Attributes
The ideal person is:
- Tech-curious and eager to learn how IT supports a working business.
- Calm and level-headed under pressure, especially during connectivity outages.
- Comfortable in a small, informal, family-oriented team where everyone helps out.
- A clear communicator, both with internal users and external service providers.
- A self-starter who is willing to research, problem-solve and find their own answers.
- Reliable, accountable and able to take ownership of issues from start to resolution.
- Genuinely interested in building a long-term career in IT.
